SEATUCK ENVIRONMENTAL AND INTERPRETIVE CENTER ISLIP, NY (PHASE 2 CONSTRUCTION) THE MISSION OF THE SEATUCK ENVIRONMENTAL ASSOCIATION IS TO PROMOTE THE CONSERVATION OF LONG ISLAND'S WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENT THROUGH EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY. LOCATED ON APPROXIMATELY 80 ACRES ALONG THE ESTUARIES OF THE GREAT SOUTH BAY, THE HOUSE AND GROUNDS WERE ORIGINALLY PLANNED BY GROSVENOR ATTERBURY IN 1916. MOST FAMOUS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF FOREST HILLS GARDENS IN QUEENS AND HIS STATURE AS A TURN OF THE CENTURY ARCHITECT , THIS EXAMPLE OF ATTERBURY'S WORK ON PRIVATE RESIDENCES QUALIFIES THIS PROJECT FOR HISTORIC STATUS. IN ADDITION TO BEING A LEED PROJECT, THE PLAN IS TO RENOVATE THE 13,000 SQUARE FOOT HISTORIC BUILDING TO ADDRESS CONTEMPORARY ISSUES OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY, SUSTAINABILITY AND A HEALTHY INTERIOR ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL BE BENEFICIAL TO BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE OCCUPANTS. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES RENOVATION THE INTERIORS ON THE FIRST AND SECOND FLOORS TO CREATE SPACES FOR BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE USE. THE UNIQUE CHALLENGE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO BLEND GREEN BUILDING PRACTICES IN WITH THE STRICT PRACTICE OF HISTORIC PRESERVATION. |

O.B. DAVIS FUNERAL HOME INTERIOR RENOVATIONS PORT JEFFERSON STATION, NY (PHASE 2 CONSTRUCTION) AFTER MERGING WITH ANOTHER LOCAL FUNERAL HOME, AN INCREASED CLIENT BASE GREW BEYOND WHAT THE EXISTING FACILITY COULD ACCOMMODATE. DIGNITY FUNERAL HOMES APPROACHED OUR FIRM WITH THE REQUEST OF UPDATING AND RENOVATING THEIR FACILITIES TO PROVIDE A DESIGN THAT COULD MAXIMIZE THE USE OF EACH SPACE. THE PROJECT, CURRENTLY IN PHASE 2 CONSTRUCTION, THE SCOPE OF WORK INCLUDES THE CONVERSION OF AN EXISTING LOUNGE AND SHOWROOM INTO A THIRD CHAPEL SPACE THAT CAN ALSO FUNCTION AS A LOUNGE OR ARRANGEMENT OFFICE. THE TWO EXISTING CHAPELS HAVE BEEN RENOVATED TO MATCH THE NEW INTERIOR STYLE. NEW CEILINGS WERE DESIGNED TO REPLACE EXISTING ACOUSTIC TILING, WOOD PANELING, CUSTOM MOLDINGS AND ARCHWAYS WERE DESIGNED AND INSTALLED THROUGHOUT THE SPACES. RECONFIGURATION OF OTHER AREAS OF THE BUILDING WILL ACCOMMODATE LARGER RESTROOM FACILITIES FOR THE BUILDING OCCUPANTS, AND REMODELING OF THE OFFICE AND EXISTING ARRANGEMENT ROOM TO MATCH THE BUILDING'S NEW AESTHETIC. WITH THE PROJECT RESTRICTIONS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION, WE HAVE MADE AN EFFORT TO CHOSE FINISHES AND FIXTURES THAT CONTRIBUTE TO LOWER ENERGY USE AND BETTER AIR QUALITY WHEREVER POSSIBLE THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT. |

EAST SETAUKET, NY THE CVS CORPORATION IN CONJUNCTION WITH SLAYTON DEVELOPMENT EARMARKED A CORNER PROPERTY IN THE VILLAGE OF SETAUKET FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW STAND ALONE CVS PHARMACY. AS PART OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT THEY WERE TO HIRE A LOCAL ARCHITECT TO DESIGN A BUILDING THAT COULD BLEND WITHIN THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY. FROM THE BASE PLAN CVS USES TO LAYOUT STORES, THE SCALE OF THE 10,000 SQUARE FOOT SPACE WAS REDUCED TO A MORE MANAGEABLE FORM. ROOFLINES WERE BROUGHT DOWN AND THE MANSARD DISCARDED FOR MORE TRADITIONAL GABLES AND SLOPES. STANDARD DRYVIT SIDING AND BACKLIT SIGNS WERE TAKEN REPLACED WITH A CLAPBOARD LOOK AND FRONT LIT SIGNAGE. TWO SIDES OF THE BUILDING WERE PLACED INTO THE HILLSIDE GIVING THE WALL AN AMBIENT EXTERIOR TEMPERATURE OF SIXTY DEGREES IN WINTERTIME. IN ADDITION, CLERESTORY WINDOWS RUN THE LENGTH OF THE WEST WIDE OF THE BUILDING TO ALLOW NATURAL LIGHT TO PENETRATE THE BUILDING IN THE AFTERNOON. THESE SIMPLE GREEN BUILDING STRATEGIES WERE INCORPORATED TO HELP REDUCE ENERGY COSTS OVER THE LIFE OF THE BUILDING. |

PATCHOGUE, NY (UNDER CONSTRUCTION) UNICORP DEVELOPMENT, AN ORGANIZATION BASED OUT OF ORLANDO FLORIDA HIRED PCA TO DESIGN A NEW WALGREENS PHARMACY FOR A CORNER PROPERTY IN PATCHOGUE LONG ISLAND. COMPLYING WITH LOCAL CODES, AESTHETIC, AND BUILDING RESTRICTIONS WHILE WORKING OFF OF WALGREENS BUILDING STANDARDS BECAME THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO THIS PROJECT. PLAINVIEW, NY (UNDER CONSTRUCTION) AS ANOTHER PROJECT WITH DIGNITY FUNERAL HOMES PCA WAS BROUGHT IN TO RECONFIGURE THE INTERIOR SPACES OF THIS EXISTING FUNERAL HOME FACILITY TO BETTER ACCOMMODATE THE COMMUNITY IT SERVES. THE FINAL DESIGN RESULT ALLOWED THE BUILDING TO HOUSE TWO CHAPEL SPACES WITH A MAIN HALLWAY TO ACCESS EACH ROOM. THE BATHROOMS WERE RECONFIGURED WITHIN THE BUILDING AND BROUGHT UP TO ADA STANDARDS. A NEW LOUNGE SPACE WAS ADDED ON THE MAIN FLOOR AS WELL. THE EXTERIOR RAMP AND STAIRS WERE REDESIGNED AS PER ADA. PHOTOS COMING SOON!

ADDITION TO STONY BROOK RESIDENCE STONY BROOK, NY THIS PROJECT WAS INTENDED TO GIVE THE OWNERS EXPANDED USE OF THE SECOND FLOOR SPACES IN THE HOUSE BY LIFTING THE EXISTING ROOFLINE TO MAXIMIZE THE HEADROOM IN TWO ROOMS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE CENTRAL STAIRWAY. LOCATED WITHIN A TOWN OF HISTORIC HOMES AND BUILDINGS, THE CHALLENGE WAS MODERNIZING THE HOMES USAGE WHILE PRESERVING THE HISTORIC LOOK OF THE HOME AND NEIGHBORHOOD. |

ADDITION TO ST JAMES RESIDENCE ST JAMES, NY THE RESIDENCE WAS INITIALLY A STANDARD SPEC HOME BUILT IN THE SAINT JAMES AREA IN THE EARLY 1980S. THE FAMILY WANTED TO UPDATE THE LOOK OF THE HOME AS WELL AS FIX ALL PROBLEMS WITH THE ACTUAL START UP CONSTRUCTION THAT PREVAILED OVER THE YEARS. THE MAIN FOCUS WAS TO FIGURE OUT ARCHITECTURALLY HOW TO CHANGE THE FACADE WITH A HOME THAT HAS TRUSS FRAMING AS THE MAIN ROOF WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE STRUCTURE. THE FAMILY WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE LOOK OF THE PROJECT AS WELL AS DEALING WITH INTERIOR ISSUES THAT THEY FACED OVER THE YEARS OF OWNING THE HOME. THE KITCHEN WAS REMODELED AS WELL AS THE BATHROOMS, AND THE SKYLIGHTS, A SOURCE OF WATER DAMAGE TO THE ORIGINAL HOME, WERE ADDRESSED IN THE NEW DESIGN. |

ADDITION TO THE LAUREL HILL SCHOOL EAST SETAUKET, NY THE LAUREL HILL SCHOOL IS A TOP ACADEMIC TEACHING COMMUNITY DEDICATED TO EDUCATING STUDENTS IN A HEALTHY, NURTURING ENVIRONMENT. WITH A LARGE TEN PLUS ACRE CAMPUS THE SCHOOL PROVIDES A NATURAL SETTING OF WOODS, FIELDS, STUDENT GARDENS AND FARMS. THE NEW DESIGN WAS FUELED BY THE COLORFUL SURROUNDINGS, THE ENERGY AND IMAGINATION OF THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY, AND PCA'S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND QUALITY ARCHITECTURE. THE PROJECT DEVELOPS A ONE-STORY 5,800 SQUARE FOOT EXPANSION THAT BLENDS INTO AN EXISTING BUILDING AND ADDRESSES ISSUES OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY WHILE BUILDING A HEALTHY INTERIOR ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL BENEFIT THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY. THROUGH A CONNECTING SPINE, THE NEW ADDITION DRAWS INHABITANTS FROM OLD TO NEW THROUGH THE USE OF NATURAL LIGHT AND OPEN SPACE. THE ADDITION INCLUDES SIX CLASSROOMS SURROUNDING A CENTRAL HUB OF COMMON SPACES. THE CENTRAL SPACES ARE DELINEATED BY OUTWARDLY SPLAYED WALLS THAT OPEN TO THE NATURAL LIGHT AS THEY RISE. THE FINAL RESULT IS AN INTERIOR SPACE THAT DEFIES THE ARTIFICIALLY LIT CORRIDORS COMMON TO MOST SCHOOLS. EACH NEW CLASSROOM CONTAINS AN INTERIOR WINDOW SEAT PAIRED WITH AN EXTERIOR BENCH ALONG THE SAME WINDOW EMPHASIZING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE INTERIOR ENVIRONMENT AND THE OUTDOOR CAMPUS. |

SETAUKET FIRE DEPARTMENT HEADQUARTERS EAST SETAUKET, NY THE SETAUKET FIRE DEPARTMENT OPERATES THREE ENGINE COMPANIES OVER ITS TWENTY-EIGHT SQUARE MILE DISTRICT. THE MAIN HOUSE SITS ON THE HISTORIC MAIN STREET CROSSROADS OF THE COMMUNITY. THE EXISTING WOOD FRAMED BUILDING, ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1930, IS NO LONGER ABLE TO SUSTAIN THE GROWING NEEDS OF A MODERN FIRE COMPANY. THE PLAN IS TO DEVELOP A MODERN AND SUSTAINABLE FIREHOUSE THAT BLENDS CLEANLY INTO THE SURROUNDING HISTORIC COMMUNITY. THE GOAL OF THE NEW DESIGN APPROACH IS TO BLEND THE MONUMENTAL SCALE OF THE FIREHOUSE INSTITUTION WITH FAMILIAR FORMS AND DETAILING MIMICKING THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD STRUCTURES. THE PROJECT CAN BE VIEWED IN THREE PARTS: THE FIREHOUSE ITSELF, THE FIRE DISTRICT OFFICES, AND THE GREENHOUSE AS THE LINKING ELEMENT BETWEEN THE TWO. THE MAIN FIREHOUSE STRUCTURE IS CLAD IN A PRECAST CONCRETE PANEL WITH BRICK SET IN FOR THERMAL MASS AND EASE OF ERECTION. THE EAST WEST ORIENTATION ALLOWS DAYLIGHTING IN THE APPARATUS BAYS AND FOR PASSIVE AND ACTIVE SOLAR ENERGY USE. THE DISTRICT OFFICES ARE ORIENTED NORTH TO SOUTH ALONG OLD TOWN ROAD, THIS STRUCTURE WAS PLACED IN A BERM, TAKING THE MOST ENERGY INTENSIVE PART OF THE OPERATION AND PLACING IT IN AN ENVIRONMENT WITH MORE STABLE TEMPERATURES ULTIMATELY REDUCING HEATING AND COOLING COSTS. THE MULTIPLE ROOF GABLES OVER THIS SECTION ALLOWS FOR THE MAXIMUM SOUTH FACING SURFACE AREA FOR FUTURE PHOTOVOLTAIC INSTALLATION. THE GREENHOUSE STRUCTURE CONTAINS THE STAIRS, ELEVATORS, AND BATHROOMS. THE STRUCTURE SERVES AS A PASSIVE SOLAR FURNACE, COLLECTING HEAT FROM THE SUN AND USING IT TO HEAT THE BUILDING'S SECOND FLOOR. |

BABYLON, NY AS ON OF THE FIRST TOWNS NATIONWIDE TO REQUIRE LEED CERTIFICATION AND THE INTEGRATION OF SUSTAINABLE BUILDING PRACTICES INTO NEW DEVELOPMENT, THEY FIND THEMSELVES AT THE FOREFRONT OF INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY, BOTH LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY. THE TOWN APPROACHED OUR FIRM WITH THE CHALLENGE OF DESIGNING A ZERO ENERGY HOUSE; THE HOUSE ALONG WITH ITS OCCUPANTS AND USERS, BUST CREATE THE SAME AMOUNT OF USABLE ENERGY NEEDED TO RUN THE HOME. THE BUILDING WOULD ALSO NEED TO ACHIEVE LEED PLATINUM CERTIFICATION, AND WOULD THEN SERVE AS AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL FOR THE COMMUNITY BEFORE BEING COMMITTED TO LOCAL FAMILIES IN NEED AS TEMPORARY HOUSING. THE FINAL DESIGN WAS A TWO STORY STRUCTURE THAT WAS ABLE TO PROVIDE ALL NECESSARY SERVICES OF A SMALL FAMILY HOME. THE DESIGN ALSO WOULD MANAGE TO CREATE MORE ENERGY THAN IS NEEDED TO OPERATE THE HOUSE DURING THE COURSE OF AN AVERAGE YEAR THROUGH THE USE OF BOTH PASSIVE AND ACTIVE DESIGN AND ENERGY STRATEGIES. NATURE WAS INCORPORATED INTO THE DESIGN OF THE HOME WITH THE INCLUSION OF A SMALL GREEN ROOF, DECK, AND A LONG NARROW GREENHOUSE SPACE ALONG THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE HOME. RESIDENTS ARE CONNECTED TO THE OUTSIDE WHILE BEING PROVIDED WITH PASSIVE HEATING IN THE WINTER AND NATURAL VENTILATION IN THE SUMMER. ALONG WITH THE PROPER PLACEMENT AND SIZING OF WINDOWS, THE COMFORT LEVEL OF THE HOME IS INCREASED WHILE REDUCING THE NEED FOR ACTIVE HEATING AND COOLING. THESE TYPES OF PASSIVE FEATURES ARE SUPPLEMENTED WITH A LARGE SOLAR ARRAY USING A VARIETY OF TECHNOLOGIES TO HELP RUN THE ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES, LIGHTING AND MECHANICAL SYSTEMS. THE DESIGN OFFERS FLEXIBLE SPACES THAT ARE COMFORTABLE AND CONNECTED TO NATURE AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY. |

PORT JEFFERSON, NY AFTER BEING MOVED SEVERAL TIMES FROM ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION, THE PHILLIPS ROE HOUSE WAS PLACED ON A VERY PROMINENT CORNER OF DOWNTOWN PORT JEFFERSON. THE ORIGINAL INTENT OF THE PROJECT WAS TO REINVENT THE HOME AS A HISTORIC VISITORS CENTER FOR THE VILLAGE. UPON INSPECTION OF THE BUILDING'S STRUCTURE PCA DETERMINED THAT THE ORIGINAL BUILDING FRAME WAS NOT SOUND ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE USE ON ITS OWN. THE FIRM PROPOSED THAT THE BUILDING BE STRIPPED DOWN TO ITS ORIGINAL TIMBER FRAMING, AND SERVE AS AN EXAMPLE OF 18TH CENTURY STRUCTURE TO BE DISPLAYED IN MORE OF A MUSEUM TYPE ATMOSPHERE. A MODERN EXTERIOR STRUCTURE WOULD BE BUILT SURROUNDING THE FRAME TO ENSURE PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS, AND SALT WATER DAMAGE FROM THE HARBOR ACROSS THE STREET. THE DESIGN ALSO FOCUSED HEAVILY ON GREEN DESIGN AND ENERGY SAVINGS FOR THE OPERATION OF THE BUILDING. |

ENERGY FITNESS GYM AND WELLNESS CENTER ST JAMES, NY AFTER PURCHASING A NEW LOT ON NORTH COUNTRY ROAD, ENERGY FITNESS, A FULL SERVICE HEALTH CENTER AND GYM, DESIRED TO CREATE A NEW BUILDING THAT WOULD HOUSE NOT ONLY THEIR CURRENT DEMAND BUT ALLOW FOR FUTURE EXPANSION AND SERVICES, SUCH AS AN OFFICE SPACE AND CAFE. IT WAS A PRIORITY OF THE CLIENT TO ATTAIN LEED CERTIFICATION AND TO BECOME A SHOWCASE OF SUSTAINABLE FEATURES FOR FUTURE PROJECTS ON LONG ISLAND TO REFERENCE. OUR DESIGN SOLUTION AIMED TO MAXIMIZE USE OF NATURAL LIGHT AND ENERGY. A LARGE OPEN PLAN PROVIDES ADEQUATE SPACE FOR EXISTING EQUIPMENT AS WELL AS EAST ADAPTATION TO NEW EQUIPMENT AS THE INDUSTRY RESPONDS TO NEW KNOWLEDGE, METHODS AND TECHNOLOGY. IN ADDITION THE LARGE OPEN INTERIOR CAN OPEN TO THE EXTERIOR SPORTS COURTS FOR OUTDOOR TRAINING AND RECREATION. THE UPPER LEVEL OF THE CENTER OFFERS PRIVATE OFFICES AND AN AREA FOR SPECIALIZED SERVICES SUCH AS MASSAGE THERAPY, NUTRITION CONSULTATION, OR HOLISTIC TREATMENTS. THE CENTER ADDRESSES HEALTH NOT ONLY BY OFFERING A PLACE TO EXERCISE IN A VARIETY OF WAYS BUT TO DO SO IN A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT OPEN TO ABUNDANT NATURAL LIGHT, FRESH AIR, AND THE OUTDOORS. |
